The GISCI Application for GIS Professional Certification - GISP®

If you are awarded a GISP Certification, you do not become a member of GISCI in the way that you belong to other geospatial or professional organizations.   GISCI is an institute that awards the GISP Certification to qualified individuals.   However, all professionals approved for GISP Certification are eligible to receive a free one year membership with two of GISCI's Member Organizations: URISA and GITA.

Effective July 1, 2015:

You can start the GISP Certification process at any time in your career, but, to be certified as a GISP Professional, all individuals must

  • Have 4 years equivalent full-time geospatial experience
  • Meet the Portfolio Requirements (minimum point requirements in Education, Experience, and Contributions)
  • Take and pass the GISCI Geospatial Core Technical Knowledge Exam
  • Complete all requirements within 6 years from start of application process
  • All individuals meeting the requirements are certified for a three (3) year period and are required to recertify for an additional three year period after that time

GISCI will offer the GISCI Geospatial Core Technical Knowledge Exam to individuals independent of the application for the portfolio review process. After July 1, 2015, anyone can start the application process at any time, either via the exam or portfolio review. The GISCI Exam was implemented later in 2015, and is a computer-based-test (CBT), administered by a third-party test vendor, PSI Online, and available in testing centers, around the world.  Exam preparation materials are available elsewhere on this site.

All applicants at the time of initial application submittal, whether starting with the exam or portfolio review,  will be required to complete and fulfill all certification process requirements within 6 years from the date of their initial application to be awarded a GISP certification. A key benefit of this change in policy is that students and others new to geospatial professions will have the opportunity to begin the certification process and take the exam whenever they believe they are prepared, rather than having to wait until they have completed all of the requirements of the peer reviewed portfolio.

All applicants, effective July 1, 2015, will be subject to an exam, a portfolio review,  and the new fee structure:

GISP Application:  $ 100

GISCI Geospatial Core Technical Exam Fee:   $ 250

GISP Portfolio Review (Ethics, Education, Experience, Contributions):  $ 100

All GISPs certified after July 1, 2015, and all recertifying GISPs, will be subject to an annual maintenance fee of $ 95/year, payable on the anniversary of your initial GISP Certification.

Effective July 1, 2015, all professionals applying for their initial GISP certification will be required to take and pass the GISCI Geospatial Core Technical Knowledge Exam,  in addition to meeting the current standards for certification via a portfolio based review based on ethics agreement,  education, experience, and professional contributions. A table summarizing changes is provided, below:

GISP Status

Fee(s)

Renewal Period

Current, active GISP recertifying (annual maintenance fee paid as a lump sum $ 285, or annually)

  $95/yr

*GISCI currently offers a 1 year grace period for recertification after expiration. Any GISP that fails to reinstate their credential within the grace period will be required to reapply for certification under the standards in place at the time of recertification.
