GIS Certification Institute Awards Program

The GISCI Awards Program recognizes excellence in the geospatial profession by celebrating individuals and organizations whose accomplishments reflect the highest standards of service, innovation, and leadership in advancing the goals of the GIS Certification Institute (GISCI).

The primary objectives of this program are to:

  • Recognize notable achievements related to GISP certification and GISCI’s mission.
  • Inspire professionals to contribute meaningfully to issues of access, privacy, geospatial ethics, policies, and practices.
  • Promote public awareness of GISCI’s impact and celebrate the accomplishments of award recipients.

Award Categories

GISCI offers the following award categories:

  1. GISP of the Year
  2. GISP Organization of the Year
  3. Map Contest Winners

Note: Awards are merit-based and may not be granted annually. Only exceptional contributions should be recognized.

 

 

GISP of the Year

Description

This is GISCI’s highest individual honor, recognizing distinguished and sustained contributions to the geospatial profession and the public interest, particularly in areas such as access to information, individual privacy, and ethical GIS practices.

 

The 2026 GISP of the Year is Shannon Doyle, PhD GISP

Shannon Doyle exemplifies the very best of the GISP credential through her leadership, integrity, and dedication to advancing the geospatial profession. Through service on the GISCI Board of Directors, Exam Development Committee, Blueprint Revision Task Force, and PreGISP Committee, she has played a key role in strengthening the rigor, relevance, and accessibility of the GISP certification while supporting the next generation of GIS professionals. Her collaborative leadership and commitment to ethical, forward-looking geospatial practice embody the spirit of the 2025 GISP of the Year Award.

GISP Organization of the Year

Description

This award recognizes any organization that demonstrates exceptional support for GISP certification and embodies GISCI’s values, including a commitment to ethical practices, professional development, and the public good.

The GISCI Organization of the Year Award recognizes organizations that actively support GISP® certification and demonstrate leadership in workforce development, open data, privacy protection, and public engagement. Following a competitive review, Arup and JMT Technology Group were selected for their sustained commitment to empowering GIS professionals, investing in professional growth, and advancing ethical, transparent geospatial practices that strengthen both the profession and the communities they serve.
