Job Title: Community Engagement Coordinator (Part-Time)

Reports to: Executive Director
Location: Remote (U.S.-based)
Travel: Occasional travel expected (conferences, meetings, partner visits)
Hours: Part-time (approx. 25 hours per week)

The GIS Certification Institute (GISCI) is the professional certifying body for the geospatial industry, supporting excellence in GIS practice through the GIS Professional (GISP) certification. GISCI fosters a vibrant community of GIS professionals, employers, and partners committed to advancing ethical, knowledgeable, and skilled practice in the geospatial field.

Position Overview

The Community Engagement Coordinator plays a key role in expanding GISCI’s reach, partnerships, and visibility within the geospatial community. This position focuses on building and managing strategic relationships that strengthen GISCI’s business development goals, enhance the value of certification programs, and grow participation in partner and employer initiatives.

This role is ideal for a motivated, relationship-driven professional with experience in outreach, marketing, or program development; someone who enjoys identifying opportunities, cultivating partnerships, and translating engagement into measurable growth for the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Business Development & Partnerships

  • Lead outreach to potential and existing GISCI Endorsing Employers, Associate Partners, and Ambassadors to grow program participation.
  • Identify and pursue new partnership opportunities with geospatial organizations, employers, and educational institutions.
  • Support relationship management with key stakeholders to enhance GISCI’s visibility and value across the profession.
  • Represent GISCI at industry conferences and events to promote programs and establish new connections.
  • Develop metrics and report to evaluate partnership growth and engagement success.

 

Communications & Media

  • Assist with management of GISCI media channels, including social media, newsletters, and website updates.
  • Coordinate with contracted media assets to develop and post engaging content to promote certification programs, events, and community stories.
  • Ensure consistent voice and branding across all communications.
  • Track trends in professional engagement, marketing, and media to recommend innovative outreach approaches.

Program Management

  • Administer and grow GISCI’s recognition and partnership programs, including the Endorsing Employer, Associate Partner, and Ambassador Programs.
  • Support the Outreach Committee by preparing materials, attending meetings, and coordinating follow-up activities.
  • Maintain accurate program records and prepare progress reports for leadership and the Board.

Community & Relationship Development

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with GISPs, employers, educators, and professional associations.
  • Collaborate with GISP At-Large Board members to strengthen engagement among certified professionals.
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration, visibility, and shared promotion across the geospatial community.

General Support

  • Work closely with the Executive Director and other team members on cross-cutting initiatives and new business development strategies.
  • Contribute ideas for improving communication strategies and expanding engagement reach.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, communications, geography, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience in business development, partnership management, or marketing—preferably within a nonprofit, association, or professional certification environment.
  • Strong writing, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects independently and meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with GIS, geospatial professions, or certification programs a plus.
  • Preference for someone who is, or has been a GISP®

 

Compensation & Benefits

  • Part-time position (approx. 25 hours per week).

  • Salary: hourly rate commensurate with experience.
  • All travel expenses compensated.
